iReward is a fun and useful app. Use it with your spouse, kids, yourself, or anyone for whom you want to provide some positive reinforcement. iReward is a motivation chart for your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad!

***Please read tips for use at bottom or go to the FAQ section of http://grembe.com so you can get the most benefit out of this app. Also check out our other apps iCommunicate and My Pictures Talk.

Behavior analysts often use tangible rewards when working with children. For example, when a child earns a certain number of stars for behavior you want repeated, they are rewarded.

Use of motivational charts is not limited to any one group. We all benefit from motivation to achieve our goals! This type of praise or approval will help parents of typically developing children, children with autism, developmental delays, ADHD, and anxiety disorders.

How does iReward work? Choose the behavior you are trying to reinforce, choose your reward, and then choose the number of times the behavior needs to be completed before the reward is earned. Then, you can take a picture with your camera, or select a picture from the camera roll, which will provide extra motivation or reminders about the goal.

Progress is tracked by tapping on a star when the desired behavior is attained. The star will then turn to gold, red, a smiley, or a checked box, depending on what is selected in Settings. When all five stars have been tapped, they turn to the selected setting, indicating that the goal has been attained. You may provide voice praise in the Settings also. You may clear all the stars by double-tapping anywhere on the screen when viewing a reward. You also have the ability to take away progress by removing a star.

Tips for use:
1) If you want the ability to lock the app so that all a child can do is view rewards and create new ones, you turn on the Lockable setting. Set a case-sensitive password in the textbox that appears and Save. To unlock all functionality, so that you can reward stars, delete rewards, goto Settings, etc., you shake the phone when viewing the list or a reward. You will be presented with a textbox to enter the password you typed on the Settings screen. To lock the app again you shake the phone or restart the app.
2) When viewing a reward you can double tap to clear all stars or to revert to the number you had when you entered the reward.
3) Image Search: when editing or adding a new picture you click on Image Search button, enter your search keywords, click Search. You then can flick to left or right to move through images. When you find one to save, click Save Selected Picture to Camera Roll. You can then do more searches to save multiple pictures to camera roll, or click Select Picture to jump right to your saved pictures to add or replace existing picture.

SoundLitracy

Sound Literacy is an instructional tool and resource for teaching phonemic awareness, phonological processing, the alphabetic principle, and word study focusing on morphology. It is the first in a unique line of apps that will encourage teachers and students to work together in an intensive word study program. With an abundance of ‘sound knowledge’, Sound Literacy provides a platform for teaching students to hear, see, and analyze words in ways they have never thought of before.

Unlike individualized computer software instruction, Sound Literacy is intended to facilitate interaction between a teacher and student(s). An instructor is needed to demonstrate concepts and skills as well as guide practice sessions with student(s). Sound Literacy can be used in conjunction with any curriculum that emphasizes phonemic awareness, phonological processing, systematic phonetic instruction, or word building with ‘meaningful word parts’. This is the most complete teaching app for word study you will ever own!

Sound Literacy features:

• Blank tiles for counting, ordering, and manipulating the phonemes within words

• Phonogram tiles organized in pantries and ready to be pulled onto the workspace for spelling words

• A workspace for ‘tapping’ and creating sound boxes one sound a time

• Six specially designed ladders for building and comparing phonemes

• Unique linguistically ordered consonant and vowel sound maps

• Popovers on the sound maps that indicate various ways to spell each sound; spellings are ordered from the most common to the least common

• Included on the popovers, are the origins of some spellings which help to categorize and make sense of a seemingly irregular spelling system

Created by teachers for teachers, Sound Literacy was intentionally designed with open-ended possibilities and maximum flexibility. The particular methodology, approach, specific language for spelling rules, and the sequence of presenting the knowledge is left up to the teacher and determined by the needs of the student(s).

Visit our website www.3dliteracy.com for more information and ongoing discussions on how to improve Sound Literacy.

Have fun studying words!

Measurement

Mathomatix: Measurement

Punflay is back with another addition to our top-selling Mathomatix series. This time kindergarteners can get introduced to basic concepts of measurement such as weight, volume and length. As with the rest of the apps in the Mathomatix series, Measurement has also been developed
based on National and California Standards. Set in an utterly cute learning environment, Mathomatix-Measurement is sure to get your child’s attention with its bright and cheerful graphics and fun activities.

The app comes with five activities that each teach a measurement concept.

Crazy Clock: A friendly voice announces the time and all you do is to move the minute hand of a cute clock to set the correct time. Kids will get lots of practice learning to associate time with familiar activities in their day. Crazy Clock is a great introduction to the concept of time.

Scale Tale: This activity introduces kids to the concept of weight. An adorable one-eyed monster teaches kids this concept by holding two items and allowing them to guess which item is heavier or lighter. Is a pineapple heavier or lighter than a cup cake? Is a head of cabbage heavier or lighter than a strawberry? Familiar objects help kids learn the concept easily.

Fill Me Up: If you had to teach the concept of volume at home you are sure to have a mess all over the floor. Instead, Fill Me Up allows you to teach this concept through easy exercises such as filling pitchers with liquids or jars with cookies minus the mess.

Long and Short: Crayons, buses, park benches are all some of the familiar objects in a kid’s life. And these can be found in this activity as objects of comparison to learn the concept of length. This game presents two objects of different lengths. Simply tap on the one that is longer or shorter.

Action Months:This game introduces the basics of duration of time through a simple drag and drop activity to fill in the letters of the months. Kindergarteners can practice the names of the months and get ready for more sophisticated concept of time in higher grades.

How could we forget to mention My Stuff? We know kids love rewards and so we have that too in Measurement. Kids will love seeing their stash of rewards grow each time they add points.

Mathomatix Measurement is a must have to your collection of Mathomatix series. And by the way, we would love to know what you think of this or any of our other apps. Endorsed by teachers

Rita Zeni, Ecole Sandy Hill Elementary, Abbotsford, BC, Canada:

“The math apps by Esa Helttula allow students to practice and reinforce the specific computation strategies taught in class, with as much or as little scaffolding as necessary.

Being able to adjust the level of difficulty to suit their needs is also very motivating for the students. I am so glad to have come across this great educational tool!”

The Opposite-Change Rule in Addition

If you subtract a number from one part of a sum and add the same number to the other part, the result remains the same. In this way an addition problem 267 + 289 is easier to solve as 256 + 300.

Long Multiplication

From a review in funeducationalapps.com: “My oldest kid has been struggling with long multiplications for a while. We have been practising and practising. Doing the traditional way on paper is ok but nothing really exciting. He is so reluctant to do it. Thanks to the iPod, it all changed few weeks ago when I downloaded the Long Multiplication App for the iPod or iPhone. Don’t expect your kids to go crazy and be like “thank you so much mum for this app” … it is still straight forward math and needs to be introduced as a help and support tool to the process of learning long multiplication. We work it out at during homework time and it does wonders, my son actually enjoys doing long multiplication, it is a nice break.”

Left-to-Right Subtraction

This math app can be used to teach and study the left-to-right subtraction method. The app is easy to use and it has an intuitive interactive interface with customizable colors and other settings. The user can solve random subtraction problems and each step is made clearer with an animation.

The Left-to-right Subtraction Method

The left-to-right subtraction method is a two-step process. In the example 936 – 581, the number to be subtracted is first written in an expanded form: 500+80+1. Each of the parts is then subtracted from the starting number. In our example 936-500=436, 436-80=356 and finally 356-1=355.

In the Everyday Mathematics curriculum the left-to-right subtraction method is one of the algorithms for subtraction.

The Trade-First Method

The trade-first subtraction method is similar to the traditional column subtraction method. The method has two stages. All of the “trading” or “borrowing” is done first. Then the subtractions are solved. This gives the method it’s name, “trade-first.”

In the Everyday Mathematics curriculum the trade-first method is the focus algorithm for subtraction.

The App is Easy to Use

The numbers are aligned automatically so that you can concentrate on solving the operations for each column.

Borrowing is animated step by step so you can see what happens. Borrowing over several columns is also supported.

After you solve the operation for each column the correct answer will fly to the right place. If the user presses the wrong button the answer will appear above the keyboard but it will not move.

The App Has the Following Features:

The user can solve random or custom subtraction problems with small and large numbers. The number of digits in the numbers can be set.

The column subtraction method is also known as columnar subtraction, long subtraction or longhand subtraction.

Review by professor Tim Pelton

Tim Pelton, assistant professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Victoria:

“If your goal is to help your child to master the traditional subtraction algorithm then Column Subtraction may be the ideal App.”

“With the ‘show current operation’ option turned on, they are constantly reminded of the next step, which can lead to efficient practice of the procedure. Then by turning off the current operation your child is able to practice remembering the steps on his/her own. Because no wrong entries are allowed the app provides a passive form of positive reinforcement and your child will likely improve in both confidence and competence with respect to the procedure.”

Being able to adjust the level of difficulty to suit their needs is also very motivating for the students. I am so glad to have come across this great educational tool!”

Zachariah R. Prowell, Highlands Elementary, Edina, Minnesota, USA:

“In my class I have used them to assist students with seeing the steps to properly completing multiplication opperations such as partial products and partial quotients. There are students who see my examples who still need some guidance, and after using your app have said, “Now I get it.” The feature of selecting possible solutions in each step helps some of my students who are still building their multiplication facts. They can gain experience in using these new concepts but not be left behind.
Helping student understanding are the animations. They are smooth and really illustrate a step-by-step understanding of how to complete new styles of multiplication.”

The Partial Quotients Division Method

The traditional long division method can be difficult to understand because it is so abstract. In the partial quotients method the student can make a series of estimates and then add the estimated quotients together.

In the example 992/8 the first estimation can be 100, which leaves 192. Next estimation can be 20 which leaves 32. Now the student knows that 8 goes 4 times into 32 and the result can be found by adding up the partial quotients 100, 20 and 4. Each student can use the quotients that he or she finds the easiest.

In the Everyday Mathematics curriculum the partial quotients division method is the focus algorithm for division.

The App is Easy to Use

After the user solves each operation or inputs a new estimate, the correct answer will fly to the right place. If the user presses the wrong button or gives an impossible estimate the answer will appear above the keyboard but it will not move.

The App Has The Following Settings

– The dividend can have from 2 to 5 digits
– The divisor can have 1 or 2 digits
– Random and custom problems
– The current operation can be hidden
– The operands of the current operation can be highlighted

Wired.com:

“Quite a useful app for learning many fraction computations.”

Fun Educational Apps:

“Fraction Math app is easy to use and really takes you step by step when adding, subtracting or multiplying fractions.”

Cool iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch Apps:

“This app is loaded with helpful math information and you will find below many of the ways in which kids can simplify learning and preparing math assignments”

Suitable for several grades and also for adults

A third-grade student can use the app to add and subtract fractions with equal denominators.

A fourth-grade student can use the app to add or subtract fractions and mixed numbers with different denominators and also to reduce the resulting fractions.

A fifth-grade student can multiply fractions by whole numbers and other fractions. She can also divide fractions and mixed numbers.

The above grades and their uses of the app are only provided as examples.

The user can choose how to solve the problems

In each step the user is presented with two choices. Sometimes both of the choices are right. When multiplying fractions the user can choose to first multiply the numerators or the denominators.

In those cases when there is only one possible next step, the user can choose between the right step and a random wrong step. For wrong steps, the app will tell, why that is the wrong step.

Intelligent help system

The Fraction Math app has a help system that provides over 60 context sensitive tips based on the state of the app. For example, when searching for a lowest common denominator, the help system will first tell how to search for the answer. If, after trying herself the user cannot find the answer, the help system will tell her what the lowest common denominator is.

Smart keyboard

When the user has to enter numbers, the Fraction Math app uses the same intuitive smart rolling keyboard as my other apps. Only one tap is needed to enter any number. In reducing fractions, a special prime number keyboard is shown.

Every step is animated

Every step in solving the problems is animated. The speed of the animations can be set and they can also be turned off.

The Lattice Multiplication Method

Lattice multiplication is algorithmically equivalent to long multiplication. A lattice (a grid) guides the calculation. All the multiplications are done first and then the additions. The method was introduced to Europe in 1202 in Fibonacci’s Liber Abaci.

In this groundbreaking book Fibonacci presented many algorithms for working with Arabic numerals. Ancient Indians and Chinese originally invented some of the algorithms. Fibonacci presented both the current standard long multiplication and also an originally Indian method called lattice multiplication, which is faster and more compact for working with larger numbers.

The Lattice Multiplication app

The Lattice Multiplication app allows the user to solve a lattice multiplication problem step by step and animates all the steps. In the steps the user will multiply or add. The correct answer will fly to the right place. If the user presses the wrong button the answer will appear above the keyboard but it will not move.

Difficulty can be set with Settings

– The multiplicand can have up to 5 digits
– The multiplier can have up to 3 digits

– Traumatic Brain Injury

Many AAC apps target higher functioning learners, and, to their credit, serve that population very well. However, there is a significant hole in the AAC app landscape for individuals with significant intellectual disabilities. We designed So Much 2 Say from the ground up with the intention to fill that hole. There is no longer a need to spend hundreds of dollars on an app filled with features that are unsuitable to the individual.

So Much 2 Say was developed with two distinct classes of users in mind: the Learner and the Administrator. The Administrator is one of several people that work with the Learner (parents, therapists, teachers, school & hospital staff, etc.) who make changes to the app’s configuration as the Learner progresses. We believe that both classes of users’ needs must be catered to in order to realize the full potential of the learning process.

Thus, for the Learner, we’ve simplified the interface to the bare necessities: the cards themselves. In it’s simplest form, you have a single card. Touch the card, and you hear a familiar voice, verbalizing what was tapped. As the Learner progresses, more cards can be made visible. Once multiple pages of cards are being routinely accessed, the concept of categories can be introduced, and the Learner can navigate in a more hierarchical fashion.

Now what about the other class of user – the Administrator? This encompasses a wide range of individuals with varying skill levels and time constraints who not only facilitate and participate in the communication exchange, but also need to be able to make changes to the app to support this process. Well, we’ve spent just as much effort trying to make the app as intuitive for them as it is for the Learner. Much care has been taken to streamline every aspect of the configuration process.

We thank you for your interest in So Much 2 Say. Please visit our website for more detailed information including video tutorials, FAQs, and suggested procedures and use cases as we continuously update and share our own experiences as well as input from other families and professionals.

123 Draw Cartoons & Illustrations

1-2-3 Draw gives you proven, step-by-step instruction by the authors of the popular 1-2-3 Draw book series from Peel Productions. Creative, skill based, and open-ended, you’ll find it engaging enough to keep kids busy for hours. And easy enough for grownups as well!

For a parent, the appeal is obvious: your child has a chance to create impressive drawings (proven success: we’ve sold over 12 million how-to-draw books), which they can then email to Grandma or their friends.

For a teacher, this presents a wonderful way to integrate technology in the classroom and also allow your students to have fun learning from an expert drawing teacher (which you’re not, we’ll guess :). Plus you don’t need to buy paper, colored pencils, erasers, nor find storage space for them. Nor do you need to give up any classroom space for drawing, which you know your kids love.

Thinking about yourself? We’ve had more than one grownup react to 1-2-3 Draw by saying it makes them want to buy an iPad just so they can use this app (seriously).

What you get:

• drawing lessons in two styles: cartoons with professional cartoonist Steve Barr, or illustrations with children’s book illustrator Freddie Levin
• ‘bundles’ of 6 lessons each; completing all of them earns a badge
• four bundles of six lessons each (value $3.96) included
• dozens of additional bundles available for in-app purchase
• simple yet powerful tool set – in other words, you’re not going to be overwhelmed with a zillion brushes, effects, stickers, etc.

You also have a ‘free draw’ zone with a larger canvas. It’s not Brushes (nor is it meant to be), but it means you’re not limited to following instructions. The app’s web site, 123drawapp.com, features a blog with free lessons designed to inspire and encourage creativity using the free draw zone.

For the benefit of parents and teachers, the app includes supervisor options, where you can create multiple user accounts, set individual account access permission, and decide whether completed drawings need your approval to earn a reward badge.

Busy Bunnies

“This is a great childrens book”
“Definitely worth getting if you have small children.”
“just the right mix of iPad app education and FUN!”
“Nice little ebook to teach labels, verbs and sight words”
“Cute – Lovely app with wonderful animations”

(the above are some comments from our readers)

Busy Bunnies is a fun animated storybook for young children (toddlers to early school age) about two little bunnies who have a very busy day. They manage to squeeze a surprising amount into just one day, but they eventually come home for dinner (carrot stew!), a bath and finally bed.

Every page contains cute animations that will amuse and delight young readers. For instance, readers can help the bunnies water the garden (growing carrots of course!), pop bubbles as the bunnies have their bath, kiss them goodnight and generally help them along with each activity throughout their busy day.

We have purposely kept the story, pictures and user interface simple and minimal so that young children can simply enjoy the story and not be distracted or confused. Words are highlighted as they are read or touched and you have the option of reading it aloud to them or having it read automatically.

We hope you and your little ones enjoy this book :)

It is definitely one of the better educational apps on the iPhone, and more of it would be most welcome.” -iPhone Educational Games

“For those parents who have children who are just beginning how to learn to read, or for those parents who want an “edutaining” app for their young child, iTouchiLearn Words is a great choice. This app only costs $1.99, but it is better than some game apps that you will find priced so much more. iTouchiLearn Words will quickly become a favorite of your child. I highly recommend iTouchiLearn Words. iTouchiLearn Words can help children learn how to recognize certain words, and can teach them that learning is a fun process, too.” Helium – 5 Stars!

“A cute and engaging educational app geared toward teaching toddlers word and image associations. Great for the burgeoning mind. I really like the egg animation, in particular. It’s actually quite brilliant, and I’m sure, fascinating for a child to behold. iTouchiLearn Words definitely has more potential than other, more static flashcard type apps in the App Store.” -AppStruck – 4 Stars!

The Writing Machine

The Writing Machine is a new app for the iPad that is designed to start introducing your child to pre-literacy concepts. It is well known that developing concepts about print at an early age is invaluable to a child’s overall literacy development.

The Writing Machine starts this process by introducing how one picture and one word go together. From this foundation, your child will begin to understand additional pre-literacy concepts including how to read text from left to right and to tell words from letters.

The entire interface is designed with your child in mind!

Tap any key on the virtual keyboard to hear the letter, see a picture of a word that starts with the letter and watch the word being written as the word is spoken aloud.

Tap the picture on the screen monitor to hear the name of the picture that is displayed.

Tap the letter in the upper left hand corner to hear the name of the letter.

134 items are included to ensure a variety of vocabulary is presented.

Bubbling Math

Your child will love to do math tasks – because this is a game – complete with levels, goals, nice graphics and music. Your child can practice all the elementary math operations, and you, as a parent, can set what task to practice.

>> We have also version for iPad, look for Bubbling Math on iPad App Store << Highlights: * 9 different graphic levels with nice music and sounds - will make it difficult for you to stop your child from solving math tasks * Task configuration - easy, but powerful - to help you set what your child will practice - based on his age and skill * Parents section - with detailed results - you will know how many tasks your child has finished and you can even view which tasks your child finished incorrectly * We are motivating - not only to learn, but motivating to continue with additional tasks, because when each new level is unlocked, your child can also get 3 cups for every level (Bronze, Silver, Gold) - and it is not easy to get a Gold cup! We have developed this game with the help of children and teachers. Children have helped us make it fun, and teachers have ensured that it is right from an education point of view. 3 easy steps to use: 1. Start app and select the types of tasks that your child will practice 2. Now you can leave your child alone - most children know exactly what they should do :-) Or you can just watch so you can see your child enjoying - yes, believe me - math tasks
3. After your child has finished, you can go through the incorrect answers with your child, or just quickly look at the type of task that is causing the biggest problem

Tips:
- you can reset game to a default state. This is useful should you want to try the game before you give it to your child, or if you want to let your child start again (possibly at a different speed)
- you can set the game speed in the Parents' section

And we are leaving the best until the end – because this is just the beginning. We are preparing new levels, new challenges and new game types.

What we do love is your feedback. Honestly, we do not know the tastes of all the parents and children worldwide, so if you have any ideas or requests for additional features, we will be only too pleased to incorporate them in the next versions. Please write to us at support@tappytaps.com. We are happy, when our customers are happy.

Dance Party Cars

Parent review of our other dance game, “Dance Party Zoo”: ★★★★★ “This is a fun app and my son loved it. The dancing pig…too cute. Dance Party Zoo had him up and moving.”

Want to get your children up and moving? Dance Party Cars is a fun way to practice balance, coordination and rhythm!

Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/user/FizzBrainApps?feature=mhee#p/a/u/0/oFxHhDf_Ww4

This fun dancing game helps children practice basic motor and balance skills. How do you play? Children begin by selecting a car for their dancing avatar. Then they choose a dance tune from their iPad/iPhone/iPod’s music library or play a favorite song on a boom box. After the music starts, children hold the iPad/iPhone or pocket the iPhone/iPod touch and dance away!

After dancing, children sit back, watch and laugh – as their cars replay the dance! A colorful and easy-to-understand graph gives children feedback about how well they did at keeping an even rhythm. Blue bars that touch the mid-line show perfect rhythm, while bars above or below the mid-line show body swings that were too fast or slow.

Children can play a one-person game against a random car or a two-person game with a friend, sibling or classmate. In the two-person version, children compare their dance graphs as their avatars dance alongside each other.

Since many children are still developing sportsmanship skills, the game includes a non-competitive option where there is no winner and all players are congratulated for their good effort.

Dance Party Cars is designed for all children who enjoy dancing, as well as those who need practice in motor and balance skills. Dance Party Cars provides practice in rhythm, balance, timing, and coordination. It can also serve as a rhythmic aid in reducing stress and anxiety. But most important of all, it’s lots of fun!
